Why this matters

Trench walls can collapse with no warning, and a small cave-in can bury a person.

What to cover

  1. Never enter an unprotected trench.
  2. A competent person inspects the trench before each shift and after anything that changes it.
  3. Use sloping, shoring, or a shield as the plan says.
  4. Keep spoil and equipment back from the edge.
  5. Make sure there's a ladder or ramp within reach.
  6. Don't work under suspended loads.

Ask the crew

  • Who is the competent person today?
  • What changes could weaken the walls?
  • Where's the nearest way out?

One thing to do today

Check the protection and the exits on every trench before anyone enters.
