Why this matters

Electrical shock and arc flash can seriously injure or kill. The most important protection is making sure the circuit is off, and stays off, while you work.

What to cover

  1. Treat any conductor as live until you have proven it dead.
  2. Find every source of power. There may be more than one.
  3. Lock and tag at every disconnect, with your own lock. Never remove someone else's.
  4. Test your meter on a known source, test the circuit, test the meter again.
  5. Use GFCI protection on temporary power and check cords for damage.
  6. Don't work energized unless de-energizing is truly not possible and your procedure and approval allow it.

Ask the crew

  • Who here is qualified to work on this circuit?
  • What would you do if a lock you didn't put on was on the disconnect?
  • Where are the GFCIs on this site and who tests them?

One thing to do today

Walk the temporary power and tag out any damaged cord.
