Job hazard analysis: electrical work and lockout/tagout

Panel work, troubleshooting, and any task where a circuit could be live.

The job hazard analysis

PPE required: Safety glasses, Insulated gloves with leather protectors, Hard hat (non-conductive), Arc-rated clothing where the task requires it, Insulated tools

  1. 1. Plan and find every energy source

    What could go wrong

A second source feeds the circuit, such as a generator, solar, or a back-feed

    How we control it

Trace the circuit on drawings and in the field. List every disconnect and source.

  2. 2. Isolate, lock, and tag

    What could go wrong

Someone re-energizes the circuit while you work

    How we control it

Apply your own lock and tag at every disconnect. Never use or remove someone else's lock.

  3. 3. Verify zero energy

    What could go wrong

Assuming a circuit is dead when it isn't

    How we control it

Test your meter on a known source, test the circuit, then test the meter again.

  4. 4. Do the work

    What could go wrong

Contact with nearby live parts, arc flash

    How we control it

Use insulated tools. Cover nearby live parts. Keep others outside the boundary. Stop if anything changes.

  5. 5. Restore power

    What could go wrong

Energizing with tools or people still in the equipment

    How we control it

Count tools, clear the area, remove locks as agreed, and announce before re-energizing.

  • Don't work energized unless de-energizing isn't possible and your procedure allows it.
  • Only qualified people should do electrical work.

When to use it

Use it before you work on or near electrical equipment. Energized work needs its own written approval under your procedure.

Review it with the crew before the work starts, change anything that doesn't match how you'll do the job, and update it when the method, the equipment, or the site changes.

Use this JHA in Reldro

  • It arrives ready to edit, and your crew uses it on their phone, even without signal.
  • Failed items become corrective actions with an owner and a due date.
  • Every completed one is kept with the site, the date and who did it.
