Why this matters

Openings are easy to forget, easy to cover badly, and easy to uncover by mistake.

What to cover

  1. Cover every opening with a cover rated for the load and fixed so it can't slide.
  2. Mark covers clearly so no one moves them.
  3. If you remove a cover, guard the opening or put it back right away.
  4. Don't step or sit on skylights or roof lights.
  5. Check covers at the start of each shift.
  6. Tell the supervisor when an opening is made or changed.

Ask the crew

  • Where are the openings on this level?
  • Who is allowed to remove a cover?
  • How do we mark covers?

One thing to do today

Check every opening cover on one floor and fix any that move.
