The job hazard analysis

PPE required: Hard hat, Safety glasses, Gloves, Safety boots, Fall arrest harness

  1. 1. Find every opening

    What could go wrong

Not noticing a skylight or hatch

    How we control it

Walk the roof plan before you go up. Mark every opening, including ones covered by snow or sheeting.

  2. 2. Guard or cover

    What could go wrong

Falls through a skylight or opening

    How we control it

Fit guardrails or secure, labelled covers rated for the load. Don't rely on the skylight itself.

  3. 3. Work around them

    What could go wrong

Backing into an opening; tripping on covers

    How we control it

Stay clear of the edge. Keep a clear walking route. Stay tied off where you can't guard.

  4. 4. Close up

    What could go wrong

    Covers removed and not replaced

    How we control it

Replace covers after you open any hatch. Tell the next crew about changes.

  • Skylights and roof lights aren't designed to hold a person. Treat them as holes.

When to use it

Use it before anyone goes onto a roof with openings, or when you create a new opening.

Review it with the crew before the work starts, change anything that doesn't match how you'll do the job, and update it when the method, the equipment, or the site changes.

Use this JHA in Reldro

  • It arrives ready to edit, and your crew uses it on their phone, even without signal.
  • Failed items become corrective actions with an owner and a due date.
  • Every completed one is kept with the site, the date and who did it.
