Why this matters

Breathing fine silica dust over time can cause serious and permanent lung disease. The dust is too small to see, so a clear-looking site isn't a safe one.

What to cover

  1. Silica is found in concrete, brick, block, mortar, stone, and some tiles.
  2. Use water or dust extraction when cutting, grinding, or drilling these materials.
  3. Use a respirator if the control methods aren't enough, and make sure it fits.
  4. Don't dry-sweep or blow dust. Use a wet method or a HEPA vacuum.
  5. Keep others away from the work area.
  6. Wash before you eat and change clothes before you go home where you can.

Ask the crew

  • Which jobs here put silica in the air?
  • What control do we have for each one?
  • Who has been fitted for the respirator they are wearing?

One thing to do today

Check that water or extraction is set up for the next cutting job.
