Why this matters

Falls from roofs are among the most serious falls in construction. Many happen near the edge or through an opening.

What to cover

  1. Protect the edge before you work on the roof: guardrails, warning lines, or personal fall arrest.
  2. Find and cover every skylight and opening.
  3. Don't work on wet, icy, or windy roofs.
  4. Keep materials away from the edge and spread loads.
  5. Wear boots with good grip and keep the roof clear of debris.
  6. Know how you'd rescue someone who has fallen and is hanging in a harness.

Ask the crew

  • What's the first thing you do on arrival at the roof?
  • Where are the openings on this roof?
  • What's the rescue plan?

One thing to do today

Walk the roof plan together and mark every opening and edge.
