Why this matters

Tools cause cuts, eye injuries, and electrical shock. Most of these start with a missing guard, a damaged cord, or the wrong tool for the job.

What to cover

  1. Check the cord, plug, guard, and switch before you use a tool.
  2. Never take a guard off. If it is in the way, find a different tool or method.
  3. Clamp the work so it doesn't move.
  4. Wear eye and hearing protection, and a respirator for dust.
  5. Unplug before changing a blade or bit.
  6. Don't carry a tool by its cord or leave it running on the ground.

Ask the crew

  • What is the last tool you saw with something wrong with it?
  • Who is the person to give a damaged tool to?
  • What does a GFCI do for you with a corded tool?
