Toolbox talk: new and young workers

The first weeks carry extra risk. About 5 minutes.

Why this matters

New workers don't yet know the site, and young workers may be less likely to speak up.

What to cover

  1. Give a proper orientation before the first task.
  2. Pair new workers with an experienced buddy.
  3. Don't assign high-risk tasks until they're trained.
  4. Encourage questions and thank people for asking.
  5. Check in during the day.
  6. Make sure they know they can stop work.

Ask the crew

  • Who showed you the ropes on your first day?
  • What would have helped?
  • Who's new on this crew?

One thing to do today

Assign a buddy to every new starter.
