Why this matters

Equipment that starts unexpectedly can kill. Lockout makes sure it can't start while you work on it.

What to cover

  1. Identify every energy source: electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and stored.
  2. Switch off and isolate each source.
  3. Apply your own lock and tag to each isolation point.
  4. Release or block stored energy.
  5. Test that the equipment can't start before you begin.
  6. Only the person who applied a lock removes it.

Ask the crew

  • Who has the lockout kit?
  • What energy sources does this equipment have?
  • What do you do if you find someone else's lock on a disconnect?

One thing to do today

Check that every lockout point on today's work has a lock and a tag.
