Why this matters

Many site fires begin with welding, cutting, grinding, or torch work, often hours after the work stops.

What to cover

  1. Use a hot work permit if your procedure requires it.
  2. Clear or cover combustibles around the work and below it.
  3. Keep an extinguisher at hand and name a fire watch.
  4. Stay on watch after the work, for as long as your procedure says.
  5. Check walls, floors, and gaps where sparks could go.
  6. Store gas cylinders upright and secure.

Ask the crew

  • Who is the fire watch today?
  • What's under the work area?
  • Where's the nearest extinguisher?

One thing to do today

Check each hot work area for combustibles and extinguishers.
