The job hazard analysis
PPE required: Welding helmet or face shield, Safety glasses, Flame-resistant clothing, Gloves, Hearing protection, Respiratory protection as the fumes require
1. Clear the area and assign a fire watch
What could go wrong
Sparks reach combustible material, spray cans, or openings
How we control it
Move or cover flammables. In the US, OSHA's general rule is to keep combustibles about 35 feet (11 m) away. Cover floor and wall openings. Name a fire watch and keep an extinguisher at hand.
2. Check the equipment
What could go wrong
Damaged leads, leaking hoses, missing guards, unsecured gas cylinders
How we control it
Inspect leads, hoses, regulators, and guards. Chain gas cylinders upright. Tag out anything damaged.
3. Do the work
What could go wrong
Burns, eye injury from arc or sparks, fumes
How we control it
Wear the PPE listed. Use ventilation or local extraction for fumes. Keep guards on grinders.
4. Fire watch afterwards
What could go wrong
Smouldering material starts a fire after the crew leaves
How we control it
Keep watching for at least 30 minutes, or longer if your procedure says so. Check hidden spaces and the other side of walls.
- Don't do hot work in areas with flammable atmospheres unless someone has specifically approved it.
- Galvanized and coated metals give off hazardous fumes. Plan ventilation for them.
When to use it
Use it before every hot work task, and attach it to a hot work permit if your procedure requires one.
Review it with the crew before the work starts, change anything that doesn't match how you'll do the job, and update it when the method, the equipment, or the site changes.
