Why this matters

A small fire is easiest to put out in the first minute, and most fires on site start with hot work, electrical faults, or stored materials.

What to cover

  1. Know where the extinguishers are and make sure nothing blocks them.
  2. Use PASS: Pull the pin, Aim at the base, Squeeze the handle, Sweep side to side.
  3. Fight a fire only if it is small, you have a clear way out and you have been trained. Otherwise get out and call for help.
  4. Keep flammables away from hot work and store them in the right place.
  5. Know the alarm, the meeting point, and who calls the emergency number.
  6. After hot work, keep watching the area for the time your procedure requires.

Ask the crew

  • Where is the nearest extinguisher to where you are working?
  • What is our meeting point and who takes the count?
  • What on this site is most likely to start a fire?

One thing to do today

Check the nearest extinguisher: in place, accessible, gauge in the green.
