Toolbox talk: guardrails and edge protection

The best fall protection is the kind you don't have to wear. About 5 minutes.

Why this matters

Guardrails protect everyone nearby all the time. A harness protects only the person wearing it and needs rescue.

What to cover

  1. Install guardrails at edges, openings, and open sides.
  2. Check the top rail, mid rail, and toe board.
  3. Don't lean or sit on rails.
  4. Don't remove a guardrail without a replacement plan.
  5. Report damaged rails right away.
  6. Rails need to take the load they're designed for. Use proper systems, not scrap.

Ask the crew

  • Where are the unprotected edges today?
  • Who can remove a guardrail?
  • What do you do when a rail is in your way?

One thing to do today

Walk the edges and fix any gaps in protection.
