Why this matters

Generators are common on site, and so are poisoning, shock, and fuel fires.

What to cover

  1. Run generators outdoors, far from doors, windows, and vents.
  2. Keep them dry and level.
  3. Ground them as the maker says and use GFCI protection.
  4. Never connect a generator to building wiring without a transfer switch installed by a qualified person.
  5. Switch off and let it cool before you refuel.
  6. Know the symptoms of carbon monoxide: headache, dizziness, nausea.

Ask the crew

  • Where's the generator, and where does the exhaust go?
  • Who refuels it?
  • What would you do if someone felt dizzy?

One thing to do today

Check the position of each generator and move any that are too close to a building.
