The job hazard analysis

PPE required: Safety glasses, Gloves, Safety boots

  1. 1. Place the generator

    What could go wrong

    Carbon monoxide; rain; tipping

    How we control it

Run it outdoors, well away from doors, windows, and air intakes. Keep it level and out of water.

  2. 2. Ground and connect

    What could go wrong

    Shock; wrong connections

    How we control it

Follow the maker's instructions for grounding. Use GFCI protection and rated cords. Never connect it to building wiring without a proper transfer switch.

  3. 3. Refuel

    What could go wrong

Fire from fuel on a hot engine

    How we control it

Switch off and let it cool. Refuel away from ignition sources. Use approved containers.

  4. 4. Shut down and store

    What could go wrong

    Hot surfaces; fuel spills

    How we control it

Let the unit cool. Store fuel in approved containers away from heat.

  • Carbon monoxide has no smell. Never run a generator in an enclosed or partly enclosed space.

When to use it

Use it each time you set up a generator, and when you refuel or move it.

Review it with the crew before the work starts, change anything that doesn't match how you'll do the job, and update it when the method, the equipment, or the site changes.
