The job hazard analysis

PPE required: Safety glasses, Gloves, Safety boots

  1. 1. Check the area

    What could go wrong

Fire in walls, insulation, or ceilings

    How we control it

Remove combustibles. Use a heat shield or fire blanket. Keep an extinguisher and name a fire watch.

  2. 2. Prepare the joint

    What could go wrong

    Water in the pipe; burns

    How we control it

Drain and dry the pipe. Wear gloves and let the joint cool before you touch it.

  3. 3. Heat and join

    What could go wrong

    Flame touching nearby materials; fumes

    How we control it

Keep the flame away from wood and plastic. Provide ventilation. Check the filler for hazardous metals.

  4. 4. Watch after the work

    What could go wrong

    Smoldering hidden material

    How we control it

Stay on fire watch for as long as your procedure says. Check behind the work before you leave.

  • Many building fires start when torch heat reaches material you can't see. Check behind the wall.

When to use it

Use it for any torch work on pipe, especially in finished buildings.

Review it with the crew before the work starts, change anything that doesn't match how you'll do the job, and update it when the method, the equipment, or the site changes.
