The job hazard analysis

PPE required: Hard hat, Safety glasses, Gloves, Safety boots, High-visibility vest

  1. 1. Prepare the trench

    What could go wrong

    Wall collapse; water; poor footing

    How we control it

Confirm protection is in place and checked. Pump out water before anyone enters.

  2. 2. Lift and lower the pipe

    What could go wrong

    Crushing and strains

    How we control it

Use rated slings and equipment. Keep people out from under the load. Never position your hands where the pipe could trap them.

  3. 3. Join the pipe

    What could go wrong

    Pinch points; awkward posture

    How we control it

Use the right tools. Keep hands out of the joint as it closes. Take breaks.

  4. 4. Bed and backfill

    What could go wrong

    Pipe moves; collapse during backfill

    How we control it

Follow the bedding detail. Keep everyone out of the trench while you backfill.

  • Make sure there's a ladder or ramp within reach of everyone in the trench.

When to use it

Use it for any pipe laying in an excavation, and review it when the pipe size or the ground changes.

Review it with the crew before the work starts, change anything that doesn't match how you'll do the job, and update it when the method, the equipment, or the site changes.
