The job hazard analysis

PPE required: Hard hat, Safety glasses, Gloves, Safety boots, Hearing protection, Respirator or mask

  1. 1. Plan the dust controls

    What could go wrong

    Silica dust in the air

    How we control it

Choose a wet method or a tool with extraction. Plan how you'll keep dust from reaching others.

  2. 2. Set up and check

    What could go wrong

    Hidden services; unstable work

    How we control it

Scan for rebar and services. Secure the work. Check the blade.

  3. 3. Cut or grind

    What could go wrong

    Dust, noise, kickback, and slurry

    How we control it

Use water or extraction the whole time. Wear a respirator, hearing and eye protection. Stand clear of the line of the blade.

  4. 4. Clean up

    What could go wrong

Dust blown back into the air

    How we control it

Use a wet method or a HEPA vacuum. Don't dry-sweep or use compressed air.

  • Silica dust is too fine to see. A clear-looking area isn't a safe one.

When to use it

Use it for any task that makes dust from concrete, brick, block, or stone.

Review it with the crew before the work starts, change anything that doesn't match how you'll do the job, and update it when the method, the equipment, or the site changes.
