The job hazard analysis

PPE required: Hard hat, Gloves, Safety boots, High-visibility vest

  1. 1. Check the forecast and the site

    What could go wrong

Ice on walkways, ladders, and scaffolds; frozen ground

    How we control it

Treat ice before work starts. Check surfaces again as the temperature changes.

  2. 2. Dress for the conditions

    What could go wrong

Cold stress; numb hands that drop tools

    How we control it

Wear layers, insulated gloves that still let you grip, and dry socks. Change wet clothes.

  3. 3. Plan warm-up breaks

    What could go wrong

    Frostbite and hypothermia

    How we control it

Set up a warm, dry place. Take breaks more often, and drink warm fluids.

  4. 4. Use equipment safely

    What could go wrong

Cold-stiffened cords, hoses, and batteries; slips on ice

    How we control it

Check cords and hoses for cracks. Keep walkways gritted. Warm up equipment as the maker advises.

  • Know the signs of cold stress: shivering, slurred speech, numb or pale skin. Get help early.

When to use it

Use it when the forecast is cold enough to affect people, surfaces, or equipment, and review it each morning.

Review it with the crew before the work starts, change anything that doesn't match how you'll do the job, and update it when the method, the equipment, or the site changes.

Use this JHA in Reldro

  • It arrives ready to edit, and your crew uses it on their phone, even without signal.
  • Failed items become corrective actions with an owner and a due date.
  • Every completed one is kept with the site, the date and who did it.
