The job hazard analysis

PPE required: Hard hat, Safety glasses, Gloves, Safety boots, Hearing protection, Respirator or mask

  1. 1. Check the tool and the disc

    What could go wrong

    Cracked discs; missing guard

    How we control it

Inspect the disc and the guard. Use the right disc for the job and the speed rating. Never remove the guard.

  2. 2. Set up the work

    What could go wrong

    Sparks; moving work

    How we control it

Clamp the work. Clear combustibles. Wear a face shield with safety glasses.

  3. 3. Grind or cut

    What could go wrong

    Kickback; disc break; dust

    How we control it

Hold with both hands and stand to the side of the line of the disc. Let the tool reach full speed. Use water or extraction for masonry.

  4. 4. Stop and store

    What could go wrong

    Disc still turning; hot surfaces

    How we control it

Wait for the disc to stop. Unplug before you change it. Let the work cool.

  • Grinding concrete and masonry makes silica dust. Use dust controls and a suitable respirator.

When to use it

Use it for any grinder task, and review it when the disc, material, or location changes.

Review it with the crew before the work starts, change anything that doesn't match how you'll do the job, and update it when the method, the equipment, or the site changes.
