Why this matters

A short pause costs very little. Carrying on with a problem you've spotted can cost a lot more.

What to cover

  1. Everyone on this site has the right and the duty to stop work they think is unsafe.
  2. Say what you see: "I'm stopping because..." Keep it short and calm.
  3. Supervisors thank the person and look at the problem before work restarts.
  4. Nobody gets in trouble for stopping a job in good faith.
  5. Work restarts only when the issue is fixed or you agree it's safe.
  6. If you aren't sure, ask. Asking is never the wrong call.

Ask the crew

  • When have you seen something and stayed quiet?
  • What would make it hard for you to stop a job?
  • Who do you tell if your supervisor isn't there?

One thing to do today

Pick one task today and ask the crew what would make them stop it.
