Why this matters

Spoil, materials, and machines close to an excavation add load to the wall and can fall in.

What to cover

  1. Keep spoil and materials back from the edge.
  2. Use barriers and signs to mark the edge.
  3. Use stop blocks for trucks that tip or reverse to the edge.
  4. Cross trenches only at crossings with handrails.
  5. Check the edge after rain and vibration.
  6. Don't stand or work at the edge without protection.

Ask the crew

  • How far back is our spoil?
  • Where do people cross?
  • What changes the edge here?

One thing to do today

Measure the stand-off at each excavation and fix any that are too close.
