Why this matters

Strains and sprains from lifting and carrying are among the most common injuries. They build up over time, so small habits matter.

What to cover

  1. Check the load before you lift: weight, shape, route, and where it is going.
  2. If it is heavy, long, or awkward, use a cart or hoist, or ask for help.
  3. Keep the load close, bend your knees, keep your back straight, and avoid twisting.
  4. Move your feet to turn rather than twisting your body.
  5. Lift to waist level when you can and don't lift above your shoulders.
  6. Set it down before you adjust your grip.

Ask the crew

  • What is the heaviest thing you move on this job, and how do you move it?
  • What equipment would make that easier?
  • When is it okay to say no to a lift?

One thing to do today

Find one repeated lift on the site and arrange a cart or a hoist for it.
