Why this matters

PPE protects only if it is the right type for the hazard, is in good condition, and is worn properly.

What to cover

  1. Match the PPE to the hazard: head, eyes, ears, hands, feet, lungs.
  2. Check it before use. Cracked hard hats, scratched lenses, and torn gloves get replaced.
  3. Wear it properly: fitted, adjusted, and for the whole task.
  4. Hard hats expire; follow the manufacturer's guidance.
  5. Keep it clean and stored where it won't be damaged.
  6. Remember that PPE doesn't remove the hazard. Remove or control the hazard first where you can.

Ask the crew

  • What PPE does this task need?
  • What would stop you wearing it, and how do we fix that?
  • Where do you get a replacement?

One thing to do today

Check that replacement PPE is on site and within reach.
