Why this matters

Excavators swing in a wide arc and the operator often can't see the ground crew.

What to cover

  1. Stay out of the swing radius while the machine is working.
  2. Make eye contact with the operator before you step in.
  3. Keep a spotter if you must work near it.
  4. Don't stand under the bucket or a raised load.
  5. Keep the bucket low when traveling.
  6. Operators: lower the attachment, stop the engine, and remove the key when you leave.

Ask the crew

  • How far does the machine reach?
  • What signal does the operator use?
  • Who is on the ground today?

One thing to do today

Mark the swing zone with cones or barriers.
