The job hazard analysis

PPE required: Hard hat, Safety glasses, Gloves, Safety boots, High-visibility vest, Hearing protection

  1. 1. Check the area is clear

    What could go wrong

People in the trench or in the machine's path

    How we control it

Confirm no one is inside. Use a spotter and a clear signal.

  2. 2. Place the fill

    What could go wrong

Loads that fall in; the machine tipping at the edge

    How we control it

Keep the machine back from the edge, and tip material in layers.

  3. 3. Compact

    What could go wrong

Vibration, noise, and dust; the plate or roller pinning someone

    How we control it

Wear hearing protection. Keep others clear of the compactor. Never leave one running unattended.

  4. 4. Check the work

    What could go wrong

    Settlement and hidden voids

    How we control it

Check levels and compaction as the plan requires, and mark soft spots.

  • Don't let a walking worker share space with a machine without a spotter.

When to use it

Use it for any backfill, and review it when equipment or ground conditions change.

Review it with the crew before the work starts, change anything that doesn't match how you'll do the job, and update it when the method, the equipment, or the site changes.

Use this JHA in Reldro

  • It arrives ready to edit, and your crew uses it on their phone, even without signal.
  • Failed items become corrective actions with an owner and a due date.
  • Every completed one is kept with the site, the date and who did it.
