The job hazard analysis

PPE required: Hard hat, Safety glasses, Gloves, Safety boots, Respirator or mask

  1. 1. Prepare the area

    What could go wrong

    Sparks reaching combustibles; confined fumes

    How we control it

Move or cover flammables. Name a fire watch. Provide ventilation or extraction.

  2. 2. Check the equipment

    What could go wrong

    Damaged leads; shock; gas leaks

    How we control it

Inspect leads, clamps, and connections. Keep the machine dry. Check gas hoses and regulators.

  3. 3. Weld

    What could go wrong

    Arc flash, burns, and fumes

    How we control it

Wear a welding helmet, gloves, and flame-resistant clothing. Screen the area so others don't look at the arc.

  4. 4. Finish and watch

    What could go wrong

Smoldering fires after the work ends

    How we control it

Keep a fire watch for as long as your procedure or local rules say. Let hot metal cool before you handle it, and mark it.

  • Welding some coated or galvanized metals gives off harmful fumes. Check the material and the label.

When to use it

Use it before welding, and attach it to a hot work permit if your procedure needs one.

Review it with the crew before the work starts, change anything that doesn't match how you'll do the job, and update it when the method, the equipment, or the site changes.

Use this JHA in Reldro

  • It arrives ready to edit, and your crew uses it on their phone, even without signal.
  • Failed items become corrective actions with an owner and a due date.
  • Every completed one is kept with the site, the date and who did it.
