What changed
Each open tab asks the server whether anything has changed and gets the answer the moment it has. It carries only that something changed, never message text, and the old slow checks stay as a back-up. This is not a socket: on a weak connection an update can take a little longer.
Why it matters
Conversations feel live, so a question on site gets answered while it still matters.
